You Don't Have To Choke Under Pressure

choke-book-smallHave you ever wondered which comes first, the brain or the body?  Does the body lead the brain or the other way around? The more experts I interview, the more evident it becomes that the brain is the central computer that dictates what we eat, where we are going, how we feel, how we overcome adversity, how we finish the race.  Much has been studied and said about the body, and how to keep it fit, but now with Americans living longer the brain is taking central stage.  The brain must be challenged and exercised just as much as the body.  

You can also train your brain to perform without choking when under pressure.  It's true practice makes perfect, and it takes 10,000 hours of practice to perfect a skill and that is where memory comes in.  The more you do something, the more your brain and muscles memorize the process.  So, don't cheat yourself, practice and do the work.  Dr. Sian Beilock, who is a special guest on The Kiki Vale Show Friday, April 8, continues to say that when the big day comes to show what you've learned simulate the performance before hand to alleviate or reduce the chance of choking.

Finally, my favorite Sianism:   Over analysis is paralysis.

Today, I had the opportunity to chat with Clint Carter, the Associate Editor of Men's Health Magazine about our upcoming interview for The Kiki Vale Show this Friday.  Clint's research of food science for the magazine and for the book series EAT THIS NOT THAT has expanded his knowledge of how to eat, and what choices to make both on the run and otherwise. Some rules we discussed include: 1) Never grocery shop on an empty stomach, and never wait to eat until you are starving because doing so will cause you to make poor choices in nutrition.  2) Start your day with protein, it takes longer to digest and this fuel food will cause you to not eat as much throughout the day. Speaking of protein, may I suggest my favorite one ..Chobani yogurt.  Chobani yogurt is protein packed and their straining process removes only the liquid from the yogurt leaving the whey protein intact.  The result is a protein packed yogurt with 2 times more than regular yogurt.  3) Eat veggies, which load your body with nutrients and goodness, stay away from sugar which is an empty calorie making you fat and hungrier.
